Alcaraz is about 80 kilometres from Albacete at the foot of the Homonymous mountain and is outstanding for the monuments in its historic old town. Of these, special mention should be made of it's of Plaza Mayor square which dates from the 16th century. It is a solemn and rather sober construction, flanked by the Trinidad and El Tardon towers.
Close by is the Lonja del Corregidor market, dating from the same period. At the highest part of the village you will find the walls from its 13th century castle. There are other interesting buildings to be seen, including the María Magdalena Convent. The best thing is to wander its streets and discover the interesting sites in this village in the La Mancha Region.
Alcaraz is on the eastern slope called 'San Cristobal Hill'.
Castle Alcaraz
Alcaraz Castle stands on the hill overlooking the west of the town. The origins of the Alcaraz are very old, mainly from the Muslim dominated period, who are attributed to the construction of the castle.
The Christians, in their advance toward the southeast peninsula, captured the town of Alcaraz. King Alfonso VIII of Castile was the conquered the town in 1213 after a long siege. Now it is owned by the Catholic church and is used for the celebration of religious events.
Tower Gorgoji
The tower is adjacent to Gorgoj Guadalmena river in the town and is in good condition, although much renovated. It is now privately owned and is used as a dwelling.
