Calella

Calella de Palafrugell & Llafranc

Calella de Palafrugell and it's neighbouring resort town of Llafranc are situated in the northern part of the Costa Brava, being about 50km south of the French border and about 37km north of Lloret de Mar. The centre of these resort towns are about 1km from each other, so on this page we describe them both. Both towns have sandy beaches situated in coves, otherwise surrounded mostly by an interesting and rocky coastline.

Calella de Palafrugell should not be confused with the larger, and much more commercialised resort of Calella, which is further along the coast in the direction of Barcelona,

Calella

These two small seaside resorts, whilst busy in the summer season, do not have the large hotels and mass tourism of many of the other Costa Brava resorts such as Lloret de Mar. They are low key, relatively quite and perfect for a relaxing holiday. Calella de Palafrugell has it's own fishing port, while Llafranc is considered a luxury in the northern part of Spain, with houses costing a small fortune.

The town has a quite a number of good hotels, apartments and further behind the town, a number of good campsites. Calella, like much of the picturesque Costa Brava, north of Palamos, Calella has moved slightly more upmarket in recent years and now offers some very high quality restaurants and hotels.

Llafranc

Llafranc is within easy walking distance of it's neighbouring town of Calella de Palafrugell, so a holiday here offers more than just one beach or promenade. A true delight in summer with a very pleasant ambience.

The Hotel Llafranc dominates the main sea promenade and was also popular with artists such as Salvador Dali and Ernest Hemingway, and the English writer Tom Sharpe is also a resident of Llafranc.

Llafranc

Llafranc is a safe place for all the family, especially the younger ones. The beach is safe and there is a minimum of traffic in the town, on the promenade and in the port area.

If you are into sports there is something for everyone here - a very large tennis club, three diving schools, and within only a short distance from the town there are three golf courses, two of which are at championship level, and then of course there is the beautiful Mediterranean sea and all the water sports.
