Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria has the second largest population of the Canary Islands, and it's name originally meant 'Great Island of Dogs'. It is situated in the Atlantic Ocean just 93 miles (150 Kilometers) off the northwest African coast. The capital of the island is Las Palmas (Las Palmas de Gran Canary) and not to be confused with the nearby island of Las Palmas. The island is situated southeast of the island of Tenerife and west of Fuerteventura. It is roughly circular in shape and is of volcanic origin.

Gran Canaria has a good road network covering all the island - ideal for rent-a car enthusiasts who want to tour the island. The western and southern parts are the areas most frequented by tourists, while the north and western regions are quieter and less inhabited.

Map

The island has one airport which is on the western side and is one of the busiest airports in the whole of Spain. Very large numbers of holiday makers come to this island, with very good reason. Not only are the many golden beaches a delight, but the temperature is comfortable throughout the year, getting neither too hot or too cold. The southern half of the island tends to be more flat and sandy, while the northern part more mountainous and green. There is also a temperature difference between north and south. The famous Dunes of Las Maspalomas are located between Playa del Inglés and Maspalomas in the south of the island and a hugh draw for both sun worshipers and naturists alike.

With so many visitors to the island there are a hugh selection of attractions for when you want a change from the beaches. Then there is also the island capital, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, which is well worth a visit. Even Christopher Columbus called there on his way back from the Americas. I wonder what he would make of it today?

Most of the holiday hotels are placed conveniently near the best beaches, which are mostly in the south of the island, and can be reached easily from the airport via a good motorway/road system. Some the most popular resorts include Puerto Rico - Playa del Ingles - Maspalomas - Mogan, but there are a whole host of others dotted around the coast, either next to beaches, or in the north, often between rocky escarpments.

There's something for everybody in Gan Canaria.
